Role of kidneys

A human body consists of a pair of two kidneys located in the lower back. The most common function of kidneys is to filter the waste products and excess fluid from the body. Kidneys play a crucial role in keeping the body healthy:

  • Regulate the water level in the body
  • Regulates mineral level like sodium, protein, calcium and phosphorus
  • Removes waste substance such as urea produced from the breakdown of the protein
  • It produces the hormone that controls the production of red blood cells.

What is dialysis?

Dialysis substitutes the natural work of the kidneys when kidneys are not able to perform the regular function. They are responsible for purifying the blood by removing waste and excess fluid from the body. This process helps in keeping the body in balance when the kidneys can’t do their job.

Dialysis is used for the normal running of the body as without dialysis one can’t cure for kidney disease and other affecting the kidneys. However, dialysis is not a cure for kidney disease and doesn’t correct endorphin level.

Types of dialysis

There are mainly 2 types of dialysis that one can opt for in case of severe cases, namely:

  • Hemodialysis is the most common types of dialysis which use an artificial kidney to remove the waste and excess fluids from the body. The physician will surgically create a vascular access to create an entrance into the blood vessels. This vascular access allows the larger blood to flow through the body and the more blood will be filtered and purified
  • Peritoneal dialysis involves the surgery to implant a catheter to the belly area. A special fluid known as dialysate flows into the abdomen. Once dialysate draws waste out of the bloodstream and drains it through abdomen

Risk involved in Dialysis

Both the peritoneal and hemodialysis have certain risks involved with the treatment. The common risks are:

  • Increased risk for infection in the abdominal cavity
  • A person can experience peritonitis which is an infection in the membrane lining
  • Weakening of abdominal muscles
  • Due to dextrose in the dialysate, there is an increase in high blood sugar
  • Abnormal weight gain and weight loss
  • Low blood pressure
  • Being anemic
  • Difficulty in sleeping
  • Dry and itchy skin
  • High level of potassium in blood
  • Depression
  • Pericarditis is an inflammation of the membrane in the heart

Ayurvedic Treatment for Dialysis Patients

Ayurveda can help the dialysis patients to opt out of this treatment and heal the damaged kidneys by natural methods. The Ayurvedic medicines are made of unrefined herbs such as Punarnava, Gokshur, Shirish and Varun. These herbs reverse the kidney damage and have no side-effects.

One of the renowned centers for Ayurvedic treatment for dialysis patients is Karma Ayurveda. It was started in 1937 and since then have been treating kidney patients. They use safe and authentic Ayurvedic medicines with prehistoric techniques to cure its patients. A healthy diet and herbal medicines can help in getting one rid of dialysis.
