This disease is witnessed in newborn babies. This disease is associated with short life expectancy. It is a rare disease found. In this condition, there are multiple cysts present in both the kidneys of the infant, leading to poor functioning of the kidneys characterized by low urine output. These babies tend to have poorly developed lungs and liver.

Kidney diseases are divided into hereditary type and acquired type. The hereditary disease is transmitted genetically in the family and the acquired diseases occur during lifetime because of various environmental factors. Hereditary renal impairment is not as common as acquired renal diseases are. Renal diseases transmitted through genes are further divided into structural, functional or part of genetically transmitted system diseases that also affect kidneys. Is Kidney disease hereditary?

INHERITED KIDNEY DISEASES:

There are a large variety of kidney disorders known, from common to rare, from benign to that of high morbidity. Below is the list of common hereditary kidney diseases:

  • Cystic kidney disease: These diseases are characterized by the small fluid-filled sacs that are formed on the lining of the kidneys. When these sacs increase in size they tend to compress the adjacent normal kidney, generally, one kidney is affected more than the other. Is Kidney disease hereditary?
  • Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease :

In about 95% of cases both the kidneys are affected in this condition. In such a case the kidneys enlarge and are filled with many cysts of different sizes. This condition occurs because of the poor development of collecting tubules and the uriniferous tubules fail to connect. This disease is experienced in adulthood. At birth, the kidneys size and functions are normal, but as the child enters adulthood he/she tends to form multiple cysts leading to autosomal kidney disease. Is Kidney disease hereditary? This disease is detected by an ultrasound examination of the pelvic area. This disease when not treated in time results in kidney failure and in some people is a root cause of hypertension.

There are a variety of inherited kidney diseases that are rarely seen in people. Few are discussed below:

  • AUTOSOMAL RECESSIVE POLYCYSTIC KIDNEY DISEASE: This disease is witnessed in newborn babies. This disease is associated with short life expectancy. It is a rare disease found. In this condition, there are multiple cysts present in both the kidneys of the infant, leading to poor functioning of the kidneys characterized by low urine output. These babies tend to have poorly developed lungs and liver. Is Kidney disease hereditary?
  • MEDULLARY CYSTIC DISEASE: This renal abnormality is characterized by the formation of cysts in the renal medulla. Unlike other cystic diseases, in this condition the kidneys are normal or small sized but are unable to concentrate the urine, resulting in loss of salts. There are other disorders associated with this problem including renal degeneration, gout, and liver fibrosis.
  • MEDULLARY SPONGE KIDNEY: In such a condition the tubules and the collecting ducts in the kidneys are dilated. The person in his 20s and ’30s starts experiencing the symptoms like urinary tract infection, bleeding or stone formation. In some case this disease becomes asymptomatic. Is Kidney disease hereditary?
  • ALPORTS SYNDROME:  It is a genetic disorder of collagen protein synthesis that affects the base of the filtering unit of the kidney i.e. glomerular. This results in the blood in the urine, a condition of Hematuria. In many families, deafness and eye abnormalities are also seen because of this disease.

ALLOPATHIC TREATMENT:

These diseases are diagnosed by a number of tests like Amniocentesis, ultrasonography and enzymatic assays. This is also accompanied by accurate counseling session of the affected family. The management of these patients is done on the basis of their age, the severity of renal function loss and its expected results in the treatment. In this disease, genetic counseling plays an important role. Is Kidney disease hereditary? All the treatments offered by allopaths are short-term and are symptomatic in nature. They do not treat the root cause of the problem rather provide drugs relieving the symptoms.
