Kidneys are bean shaped organs that remove waste products and excess fluids from the body. The waste products and excess fluid are removed through urine from the body. They perform a very important function as it is necessary to maintain a stable balance of the body. It also performs the function of regulating body salt’s, potassium and acid content in the body. Kidneys also stimulate the production of red blood cells and regulate the blood pressure in the body.

What Can Cause Damage to Your Kidneys?

There are many causes that can trigger kidney disease, such as:

  • Diabetes is a condition in which body is not able to make enough insulin which results in high blood sugar level. It can have adverse effects on kidneys.
  • High blood pressure can cause complication like heart attacks and strokes. If it is not controlled on time, it can have drastic effects on kidneys.
  • Glomerulonephritis is another disease that causes inflammation in filtration unit called glomeruli. If the disease progresses slowly over time, it can cause loss of kidney function.
  • Polycystic kidney disease is an inherited kidney disease. It is a problem of cyst that causes kidney damage and even kidney failure.
  • Other diseases like kidney stones, urinary tract infections (UTI), congenital disease and intake of harmful drugs.

Symptoms and Diet for Kidney Patient

Some of the common signs that are visible during kidney disease are nausea, swelling of body parts like hands, neck and feet, change in the color of urine, frequent urination, decrease in the output of urine and fatigue. Mostly these symptoms are visible in later stages of the kidney disease.

It is important to detect and treat kidney disease from progressing in its early stages. Some of the simple tests that can detect early stages of kidney disease are as follows:

  • Albumin to creatinine ratio (ACR) estimates the amount of albumin or protein in the urine. If there is an excess amount of protein it indicates the damage of filtering units.
  • A blood creatinine test is taken to calculate the Glomerular filtration rate (GFR). The GFR tells the amount at which kidney is functioning.

If the diseases like diabetes and high blood pressure are controlled one can prevent the kidneys from getting worse. To stop the progression of a kidney disease, patients usually go for dialysis or kidney transplantation.

Kidney physicians mainly suggest a balanced diet plan along with the treatment for better effects. The kidneys during such time are weak and it becomes difficult for them to filter high protein food. Also, sodium should be limited in the diet as it can increase your blood pressure. Your diet should include fresh vegetables and fruits that contain fiber and antioxidants that can neutralize and protect the body.
